The Deepest Sense of Relief

from Edward Fudge in The Fire That Consumes (p. 260):

As representative Man, Jesus has already passed before God’s tribunal – successfully. The person who believes the Gospel will enter the judgment empty-handed, pointing in that day only to the satisfactory work Jesus has accomplished apart from him and on his behalf. Since the believer already knows the standard of God’s judgment (perfection), the plea he will present before the divine tribunal (Jesus Christ alone, by faith), and the estimate God places on that appeal (justification, righteousness, vindication or acquittal), the last day will not take him by surprise, and he can anticipate it now without doubt or fear.
