Since 1989 the African nation of Sudan has been torn apart by civil war and genocide. 21 years. I graduated from high school in 1989! During these two decades, 2.5 million people have been driven from their homes and nearly 500,ooo people have been killed in the Darfur genocide alone. UNICEF reports that 80 infants die in Darfur each day due to malnutrition. Yet in the midst of this, the church of Jesus Christ flourishes. One source of encrouagement for the Sudanese believers has been the song writing of Mary Alueel Garang. Consider the lyrics of her song, “Let Us Give Thanks”:
Let us give thanks to the Lord in the day of devastation,
and in the day of contentment.
Jesus has bound the world round with the pure light of the
word of his Father
When we beseech the Lord and unite our hearts and have hope,
then the demons have no power
God has not forgotten us
Evil is departing and holiness is advancing,
these are the things that shake the earth.
The power of the Holy Spirit that pulsates in each believer is the only possible explanation for such outrageous lyrics in such outrageous conditions! It is both sobering and embarrassing to read these words, written in the midst of unspeakable hardship, and then remember how much I complain, how hard it is for me to maintain joy in life. I pray that my heart will change…
