Off Limits…

J.B. Phillips wrote a fantastic little book called Your God is Too Small.  In it he exposes many of the flawed perspectives (of God) we mortals bring to our interactions with God, and how these misconceptions are damaging.  One of the wrong perspectives he highlights is “Meek-and-Mild” Jesus, the notion that God is a push-over who doesn’t want to offend.  But this, of course, is not the God of the Bible.  The biblical God is very good at saying “no,” and that “no” is an expression of his love, not a contradiction of it!

I thought of this as I was reading in Deuteronomy 3 today…“Please let me go over and see the good land beyond the Jordan, that good hill country and Lebanon. But the LORD was angry with me because of you and would not listen to me. And the LORD said to me, ‘Enough from you; do not speak to me of this matter again.” – Deuteronomy 3.25-26 [ESV]

So God actually told Moses that the “Promised Land” was a forbidden subject in their conversations.  Off-limits.  Wow!  Let’s keep in mind that what Moses’ conversations with God were our equivalent of prayer.  Have you ever considered that certain subjects might be off-limits in your prayer life?  Could it be that God would say to us, like he did to Moses, that certain things just simply won’t be discussed – don’t bother praying about it?  If you’re thinking God would never do that, maybe “your God is too small”…
